Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major safety upgrade. In a first, Central Railway will introduce a non-AC local train equipped with automatic sliding doors — a move aimed at reducing risks linked to overcrowding and open-door travel. The development comes in the backdrop of the Mumbra tragedy, which once again highlighted safety concerns in Mumbai’s lifeline. The new 12-car EMU rake has been dispatched from the Integral Coach Factory and will undergo multiple safety and performance trials before being opened to the public.
